Why Your Skincare Routine Needs to Change on Accutane
Isotretinoin dramatically changes your skin. Your oil production drops significantly, your skin barrier becomes more fragile, and you're far more sensitive to sun exposure and irritation. The aggressive acne-fighting routine you might have used before — retinoids, acids, benzoyl peroxide — needs to be completely replaced with a gentle, hydration-focused approach. Think of your Accutane skincare routine as damage prevention and comfort maintenance.
Morning Routine
Keep your morning routine simple. Start with a gentle, non-foaming cleanser (CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser or Vanicream Gentle Cleanser are great options). Follow with a rich moisturizer — CeraVe Moisturizing Cream, La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume, or Vanicream Moisturizing Cream. Finish with a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen. Mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide) tend to be less irritating than chemical ones during treatment. Apply lip balm before you leave the house.
Evening Routine
At night, double cleanse only if you wore sunscreen or makeup — use micellar water or a gentle oil cleanser first, then your regular gentle cleanser. Apply a thick layer of moisturizer while your skin is still slightly damp to lock in hydration. For extremely dry patches, you can layer a healing ointment like Aquaphor or CeraVe Healing Ointment on top. Apply a generous coat of lip balm or Aquaphor to your lips before bed.
Products to Avoid During Treatment
During Accutane, eliminate these from your routine: retinoids (tretinoin, adapalene, retinol — you're already on the strongest one), AHAs and BHAs (glycolic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid), benzoyl peroxide (too drying in combination), vitamin C serums (can be irritating), physical exfoliants and scrubs, alcohol-based toners, and fragranced products. Basically, anything that exfoliates, dries, or irritates is off-limits.
Beyond Face: Full-Body Care
Accutane doesn't just dry out your face. Use a gentle body wash (skip long hot showers, which strip moisture). Apply body lotion immediately after showering. Use lubricating eye drops if your eyes feel dry. Apply petroleum jelly or Aquaphor inside your nostrils if they feel dry or you get nosebleeds. A humidifier in your bedroom can help with overnight dryness, especially in winter.
Sun Protection Is Non-Negotiable
Isotretinoin makes your skin extremely photosensitive. You will burn faster and more severely than normal. Wear SPF 30+ every single day, even on cloudy days. Reapply every 2 hours if you're outdoors. Wear a hat and seek shade when possible. Avoid tanning beds completely. This heightened sensitivity can persist for several months after finishing treatment, so continue being diligent with sun protection.
